Julian Tanner is a professor of sociology at the University of Toronto Scarborough. His current research interests include youth gangs in Toronto, youth culture and patterns of musical consumption, and cultures of resistance and cultures of crime. His previous publications include (with Harvey
Krahn and Tim Hartnagel) Fractured Transitions from School to Work (OUP USA, 1995), and the first three editions of Teenage Troubles (Nelson, 1996 and 2001; OUP, 2010). He has also written a number of book chapters and journal articles dealing with youth culture, pop music, and the sociology of
work. Most recently, he was granted a research contract through the National Crime Prevention Centre to evaluate the Toronto Youth Gang Prevention Pilot Project. He is co-authoring a book on the findings of the project.
